ACT for NIH Applauds Bipartisan Commitment to NIH Funding for Fiscal Year 2026

February 3, 2026 – ACT for NIH, a non-profit advocacy organization that works with Congress to make increasing biomedical research funding a national priority, released the following statement thanking congressional appropriators for bolstering the budget for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the final FY 2026 Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies (L/HHS) appropriations bill. The legislation was signed into law today as part of a broader package.

“ACT for NIH applauds L/HHS Appropriations Chair Capito, Chairman Aderholt, Ranking Member Baldwin, and Ranking Member DeLauro for their leadership in strengthening the NIH, the world’s premier biomedical research agency. The $415 million funding increase for NIH’s base budget will help accelerate groundbreaking research, strengthen the economy, and maintain the United States’ global competitiveness.

“Importantly, the bill includes a critical guardrail to protect grant success rates and preserve a robust research portfolio. This provision will prevent the number of research projects from decreasing further and represents a meaningful step toward greater stability and predictability for the research community. ACT for NIH will continue to engage with Congress and the Administration to ensure that researchers have as many opportunities as possible to discover treatments and cures.

“After a year of significant uncertainty for the biomedical research enterprise, we are grateful to Appropriations Committee Chair Collins, Chairman Cole, Vice Chair Murray, and Ranking Member DeLauro for ensuring a bipartisan appropriations process that prioritized clear and decisive support for NIH. ACT for NIH will continue to work closely with Members of Congress, advocates, and scientific leaders to capitalize on historic opportunities in science and to ensure NIH remains a bipartisan priority.”
